Jacobs Principal Partner Technology Development Associates North Kingstown, RI Friday, October 10, 2008 1 PM, 212 Kirk Hall Abstract A unique characteristic involving the leading edge of humpback whale flippers is being studied for potentially significant advances in the design of foils for both hydrodynamic and aerodynamic applications. Since the Wright brothers, over 100 years of analysis, experiment, and functional operation has lead to the nearly universal design of smooth leading edges on foils such as airplane wings, ship rudders, helicopter blades, submarine dive planes, turbines, compressors, pumps and fans. However, the recent study of a unique biomimetic application involving leading edge foils with distinct tubercles or "bumps" is showing some truly remarkable characteristics. Both 3-D computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis as well as recent wind tunnel tests are indicating noteworthy increases in maximum lift, reductions in drag, and especially significant, substantially greater angles of attack prior to stall. This seminar will highlight the emergence of the idea, recent wind tunnel test data, and the potential implications for wind turbines, helicopters, and fixed wing aircraft. Faye Boudreaux-Bartels) Date: Thu, 09 Oct 2008 13:30:20 -0400 Subject: [grads] Changes in ELE & BME course codes and # credits Message-ID: <48EE3FAC.8050600@ele.uri.edu> Dear Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering Students, The 2008-09 URI Catalog includes recent changes that were made to the code and number of credits of some ELE and BME courses as well as changes to engineering degree requirements. The rationale for these changes is summarized below, and a list of course code changes can be found in the attached pdf file. You may find it helpful to keep a copy of the attachment handy during pre-registration. (1) Split of combined Lecture + Lab courses into 2 separate courses: ABET, the US Engineering degree accrediting agency, recommended that the department use separate course codes to clearly identify which courses were lecture oriented versus those which were lab oriented. So, the department split each 4 credit lecture+lab course into two courses by creating a new course code. For example, this spring you'll find that the former 4 credit course ELE 343 - Electronics II has been split into a modified 3 credit lecture only course, ELE343 - Electronics II, plus a new, 1 credit lab only course, ELE344 - Electronics II Lab, both of which must be taken concurrently. Lecture and lab course code splits were made to the following courses: ELE 205, 208, 306, 342, 343, 401, 405, 408, 427, 436, 444, 447, and 458. (2) Increase in course credits: One credit was added to each of the following courses: ELE 322, 331, 480 and 481. This reflects the addition of 50 minute recitation sessions to ELE 322 and 331 to cover the use of Mathematical software packages, such as MathCAD, to solve engineering problems. Feedback from alumni who'd taken the Capstone Design course sequence ELE480-481 indicated that the number of course credits did not reflect well the course workload. Consequently, we've modified the course syllabus, and increased the weekly class time and credit. (3) Change to new BME course code: Several Biomedical Engineering focused courses now have the new BME course code. The BME degree program is in the process of being updated to reflect the areas of expertise of returning and recently hired faculty as well as the requirements of ABET for national accreditation. Specifically, at the undergraduate level, ELE 207, 282, 307, 382, 482, and 488 have been changed to BME 207, 282, 307, 382, 482, and 464(lecture)+465(lab). Next year, ELE 489 will be changed to BME 462+463. At the Graduate level, ELE 588 and 589 have been changed to ELE 564+565 and 562+563. If you have any questions, please consult with your faculty advisor. If you're not sure who that is, a list can be found by clicking on the "Advising" link on the ECBE department web page, http://www.ele.uri.edu/ . regards, Prof. Boudreaux-Bartels Chair, Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering -------------- next part -------------- An embedded message was scrubbed... With the changes in course codes came a corresponding update in the codes of pre-reqs. As we transition from old course codes this Fall to new course codes this spring, some of you may experience Spring 2009 pre-registration problems with eCampus not recognizing that you have satisfied newly coded pre-reqs. This will mostly impact students who have taken Electronics I and Communication Systems under the old course codes, ELE342 and ELE436; the new course codes are ELE341+342 and ELE435+436, respectively. If you experience pre-registration problems and you think that you have satisfied all of the course pre-reqs, please do the following: (1) Send an email to the course instructor requesting a permission number to enroll in his/her course. Professor's email addresses can be found on http://www.ele.uri.edu/people/?sh=f (Students having difficulty registering for newly coded ELE 343+344 : Electronics II + Electronics II lab should send an email to boud at ele.uri.edu rather than the course instructor.) (2) List which semesters you successfully passed all of the course pre-reqs under the old course codes. If you are currently taking the course pre-reg, mention that also. (3) If there's more than one section of the course lecture or lab, specify which section you would like to enroll in. (4) Include your full name and student ID number. For example: "Dear Prof. Yang, eCampus won't let me enroll in your Spring 2009 courses ELE408 and 409. However, I completed ELE 305 and 313 in Fall 2007 and am currently taking ELE342, so I have the proper pre-reqs to pre-register. Please send me permission numbers so I can enroll in ELE408 lecture section and section 2 of ELE409 lab. regards, John Q. Smith ID# 123456789" Thank you for your patience during this transition period. regards, Prof. Boudreaux-Bartels -------------- next part -------------- An embedded message was scrubbed... From: "G. Saturday, March 28th, 2009. Submission Deadline, Friday, November 28th, 2008. Location: Swan Hall Across academic disciplines, "bodies" ? animal, epistemological, textual, or otherwise ? defy singular definition and elude our efforts to pin them down. As they parallel, intersect, and inform one another, these "bodies" demand rigorous research, creative thinking, and ever-evolving methodologies. How do we account for these "bodies in motion" and the complex ecologies of knowledge that they form? From what critical perspectives ? scientific, mathematic, literary, historical, political, rhetorical, ethical, philosophical ? can we examine these "bodies" in order to learn from them and from others? The graduate community at the University of Rhode Island invites submissions for posters, papers, presentations, performances and panels from a variety of disciplines exploring "bodies in motion." Possible topics and areas of interest include, but are not limited to: ? Theorizing the body or bodies ? Bodies and environmental crisis ? The legal body ? Economic bodies ? Political bodies ? Bodies and health care ? Biotechnology and ethics of the body ? Mass media and the global image of bodies ? Migration, displacement, and/or diasporas ? Bodies in literature ? Bodies as machines/Machines as bodies ? The aesthetics of movement ? Bodies in the digital age ? Bodies and the flow of technology ? Artistic interpretations of the body Submission Guidelines: Please propose individual papers or panels and indicate whether you are willing to moderate a panel. Panels of 3-4 presentations are especially welcome. To propose a paper, submit a cover page with your name; institutional affiliation; contact information (mailing address, phone number, and email); a 250-word abstract of the paper; a roughly 100-word bio; and a detailed request for audiovisual equipment (if needed). A possible resource for fabricating such tiny elements exists within microorganisms. This talk will discuss the practical integration of biomolecular motors for biologically powered microfluidic systems as well as the development of polymeric protein nanostructures such as bacterial flagellar filaments for use in micro and nanoscale devices. Bacterial flagellar propulsion represents an extraordinary system in nature for generating motion at the small scale. Their motion induces a local flow that can be used to propel cells, as well as much larger structures through a fluid environment. We have demonstrated the enabling technologies necessary to harness bacterial flagellar filaments on microstructures for use in micron-scale engineered propulsion systems. The control of microstructures powered by bacterial teamsters will be highlighted through the talk. We will also introduce biologically-inspired swimming microbots utilizing the polymorphic transformation of bacterial flagellar filaments as a direct fluid actuation of a nanoscale structural ?machine? at low Reynolds numbers. The use of biological nanostructures in engineered systems represents a critical step toward understanding both how the biological world has evolved at the nanoscale as well as how scientists and engineers can mimic and improve on nature using modern fabrication and assembly.
