Check below for the description. We will have the first lecture tomorrow at 4pm at Kelley 203. Stop by if you're interested. If you can not make it tomorrow, please let me know by email if you are considering to take this course, or just stop by my office if you want to discuss. The main focus in this course is on a semester-long open-ended project. 'Open-ended' means that the final outcome of each project may differ significantly from the proposed project, e.g., because of insights obtained during project execution. The progress of each student during project execution is far more important than the actual outcome. The course will consist of two parts: the first part covers general advanced computer architecture topics, the second part focuses on particular architecture solutions (e.g., comparison of different processor types) and is based on recent research papers. Students are further expected to present at least one paper of their choosing during the second part of the course and to submit short summaries of the papers covered in class The final grade will be determined using the following, approximate weights: Class participation: 10% Paper summaries: 20% Project: 50% Written and oral presentations: 20% ----- Prerequisite: ELE 548: Computer Architecture or equivalent or instructor's permission ----- List of Topics: --------------- + Instruction-level parallel processors (ILP) + Advanced Techniques to exploit ILP - Speculative execution - Value and Address Prediction - Value Reuse - Precomputation - Prefetching Techniques + Thread-Level Parallelism - Simultaneous Multithreaded Architectures - Multithreaded architectures - Multiprocessor/multi-core architectures + Memory hierarchies + Exploring current ILP Processors - Intel Core, Pentium 4, Xeon, Itanium2 (VLIW) - AMD Athlon, Opteron - IBM Power4, Power G5 + Embedded Computing + Virtual Machines + I/O Systems From sendag at ele.uri.edu Tue Sep 2 10:46:39 2008 From: sendag at ele.uri.edu (Resit Sendag) Date: Tue, 02 Sep 2008 10:46:39 -0400 Subject: [grads] ELE 548: Computer Architecture - for grads and senior undergrads Message-ID: <20080902104639.4805123htvsf62mn@webmail.ele.uri.edu> Hi all, Below is the description for ELE 548: Computer Architecture course for Fall 2008. This is the reason why you need to let all your contacts know about this. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it. If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even though sent to you by a friend, do not open it! Shut down your computer immediately. This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. The theme of this year's conference is: "Making the Transition from College to the Workplace," with a talk by an IEEE National Speaker and a panel discussion on advice for entry-level engineers. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased from the department secretary, Meredith, in room A-118 Kelley Annex. IEEE members get a free ticket. If you are not yet an IEEE member, join by going to www.ieee.org/join, become a member, and get a free S-PAC ticket. The purpose of the S-PAC conference is to educate engineering students on professional issues affecting their career. Whether you are close to graduation or still have several years to go, this conference will provide you with a wealth of valuable information that is not usually discussed in your classes. The information will help you to prepare for a successful career in engineering. Here is the conference program: 2:00 IEEE National Speaker Vishnu Pandey: "Career Archery: Hitting Your Mark in Your Chosen Field" 3:15 Break and Refreshments 3:30 Panel Discussion: "Making the Transition from College to the Workplace" Panelist Companies: BAE Systems Capstone Visual General Dynamics Electric Boat Naval Undersea Warfare Center 5:00 Raffle - prizes include Ipod shuffle, memory sticks, and gift certificates. Must be present to win. 5:30 Dinner in the Multicultural Center The panelists, as well as additional representatives from their companies, faculty, and alumni, will come to dinner with us. This is an excellent opportunity to talk with a variety of people about the engineering profession. I encourage all ECBE students to attend this conference using option (1) below. OPTIONS (1) Attend the talk and/or panel discussion, raffle, and dinner with a ticket ($5). Note that the catered dinner is a 17-dollar value. With sponsored subsidies, you get the dinner and raffle included with your five dollar ticket. IEEE members get a free S-PAC ticket. No Tuesday window.] Message-ID: <3151.131.128.51.96.1222784825.squirrel@webmail.egr.uri.edu> FYI. We all probably got this original e-mail, but I didn't recall getting it and didn't know the Tuesday window was gone. So I am sending just in case. Also, I was informed that the Payroll Office is no longer doing reminder calls that there are hours not approved. So please be sure all hours are approved by 4:30 pm on Monday. Perhaps a reminder to students to enter their hours daily and to supervisors to approve Sunday or Monday would be helpful to minimize corrections. Thanks.
