Meredith ---------------------------- Original Message ---------------------------- Subject: Dept. Graduate Social From: "Meredith Leach" Date: Mon, January 26, 2009 4:35 pm To: grads at ele.uri.edu -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi All: Some of you have asked about graduate socials and getting together after work/class for the Spring semester. So I volunteered to send out the first email to see if anyone is interested in this. When I worked over in ChE the grad students would get together every two weeks/once a month and sometimes I would even join them (lucky you). Some of you gave suggestions of Casey's or the Mews on a Thursday night. This way you can have free appetizers. If you know of some other good places and some deals, let me know. So let's try for either Thursday, February 5th or 12th from 5:00 - ??? p.m. at Casey's. Please let me know if this is something you are interested in doing once a month or so. I have no problem arranging a day per month and emailing all of you. It seems Thursday evenings work well but if that isn't the case, I'm open to suggestions. I know some of you part-time students have told me that you don't really feel apart of the department and also don't really know your other peers. This is a good way of getting together and relaxing for a few hours during the week. Looking forward to your comments. Regards, Meredith Meredith A. SMILE (Science and Math Investigative Learning Experiences) is an after-school science and math club for middle school and high school students all over the state of RI, http://www.uri.edu/smile/. Its purpose "is to increase the number of underrepresented minority and educationally disadvantaged students who graduate from high school qualified to go on to higher education and pursue career in science, math, engineering and health professions." In the attachment, Lacey Schlachter is asking all URI engineering students to volunteer a few hours of their time on March 6-7 (MIddle School Engineering Challenge) or March 27-28 (High School Engineering Challenge) to serve as a Mentor or Consultant for a team of 4-8 teenagers, helping them think through their design. This year's projects focus on Cranes, Magnetic Levitation, or Remote Operated Vehicles but you don't need to be a mechanical engineer to have more than adequate background and skills to help - remember, you know a lot more than 8th graders! All you need are your engineering problem solving skills - i.e. how to think through a problem and brainstorm potential solutions. Often, the middle and high school students are interested in talking with you and finding out why you decided to study engineering. Some have never met an engineer. If you can volunteer some time to this very exciting and rewarding event, please contact Ms. Lacey Schlachter and plan to attend one of the Mentor Training Workshops on Feb. 23 or 25th. He will speak on the topic of "Near Field Plasmon Detector for Biosensor Applications" this Friday, Feb-20 in Room 212 Kirk Hall, at 1 p. m. Please find the abstract of his presentation attached. For ME graduate students, satisfactory completion of MCE 502 requires attendance at all the department seminars. If you are unable to attend the seminar, please let me know in advance. Looking forward to seeing you all. Sincerely, David Mihail Bora Friday, February 20, 2009 1 PM, 212 Kirk Hall ABSTRACT Integrated surface plasmon resonance biosensors promise to enable compact and portable biosensing at high sensitivities. To replace the far field detector traditionally used to detect surface plasmons we integrate a near field detector below a functionalized gold film. The evanescent field of a surface plasmon at the aqueous-gold interface is converted into photocurrent by a thin film organic heterojunction diode. We demonstrate that use of the near field detector is equivalent to the traditional far field measurement of reflectivity. The sensor is stable and reversible in an aqueous environment for periods of 6 hrs. For specific binding of neutravidin, the detection limit is 4 ??g/cm2; we predict a maximum sensitivity that is three times lower than a comparable conventional SPR biosensor. The sensitivity of the near field detector can be further improved by reducing surface roughness of the gold layers and optimization of the device design. -- David Chelidze, Associate Professor Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics University of Rhode Island 203 Wales Hall, 92 Upper College Rd Kingston, Rhode Island 02881 1.401.874.2356 telephone 1.401.874.2355 facsimile http://www.mce.uri.edu/chelidze/ -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Title: WorkOut: I/O Workload Outsourcing for Boosting RAID Reconstruction Performance Abstract User I/O intensity can significantly impact the performance of on-line RAID reconstruction due to contention for the shared disk bandwidth. Based on this observation, this talk presents a novel scheme, called WorkOut (I/OWorkload Outsourcing), that can significantly boost RAID reconstruction performance. WorkOut effectively outsources all write requests and popular read requests originally targeted at the degraded RAID set to a surrogate RAID set during reconstruction. Our lightweight prototype implementation of WorkOut and extensive trace-driven and benchmark-driven experiments demonstrate that, compared with existing reconstruction approaches, WorkOut significantly speeds up both the total reconstruction time and the average user response time. Importantly, WorkOut is orthogonal to and can be easily incorporated into any existing reconstruction algorithms. Furthermore, it can be extended to improving the performance of other background support RAID tasks, such as re-synchronization and disk scrubbing. If you plan to attend this workshop, please send an e-mail RSVP to vaccaro at ele.uri.edu. The Tau Beta Pi Engineering Futures Program was established to provide interpersonal skills for engineering students. This is accomplished through the presentation of sessions on campus by alumnus Tau Bates who are trained in the materials. The Engineering Futures Program received national recognition as winner of the 2007 Excellence in Engineering Education Collaboration Award. The speaker will be Dr. Stephen Kramer, Engineering Manager at Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies Company, East Hartford, CT. Here is a description of the sessions: People Skills Module 1: Describing Problems Learn how to describe problems in a direct, specific, and non-punishing manner and start problem solving that gets the problem solved and maintains relationships with others. People Skills Module 2: Motivation Problems Learn how to motivate people through the use of consequences, both natural (consequences which happen without effort on their part) and imposed (where someone needs to take an action to make the consequence happen). Also learn how to set up and follow plans once a solution is agreed upon to help ensure that the problem is permanently solved. _____________________________________________________________________ Richard J. During the phone-a-thon current engineering students phone prospective engineering students to encourage them to attend URI. Usually, prospective students like to speak with current students to find out "from the source" what classes are like, in addition to info on dorms, dining hall meals, etc. More info is below and training will be provided. If you can volunteer, lease let me know by Wed (2/25). thanks, Prof. BB veyerag at egr.uri.edu wrote: > > Here is the information to give to your students: > > Date: Monday, March 2, 2009 > > Time: 5:30-8:30 om > > Location: Admissions Office, Newman Hall > > Refreshments WILL be provided: Pizza and soda > > Training WILL be provided > > From leach at egr.uri.edu Tue Feb 24 15:38:14 2009 From: leach at egr.uri.edu (Meredith Leach) Date: Tue, 24 Feb 2009 15:38:14 -0500 (EST) Subject: [grads] Tomorrow's ELE Seminar Announcement - "Lyra: A Concurrent Model to Bridge, etc"] Message-ID: <4592.131.128.51.96.1235507894.squirrel@webmail.egr.uri.edu> Hi All: Just a friendly reminder of tomorrow's seminar speaker. The reason for this is we have a couple of students who plan on graduating this May and the results of this exam have to be in the Graduate School by Friday, April 24th. Unfortunately, the Dean can not grant us an extension. Therefore, the exam will no longer be held on May 9th. Please make note of the new date. Also, for those who have signed up to take the exam, I need to know the 4 areas you wish to answer questions for. I will need this information no later than March 15th. I will be sending out reminders as the dates draw closer. Sorry for the confusion. Regards, Meredith Meredith A.
