Hello,

Here in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science's Lipid Laboratory we
have two research studies that will be taking place early next semester. Each
of these studies involve the evaluation of student dietary intake as it
relates to young adult health risk factors. As the success of these research
endeavors relies on the involvement of URI students, we are looking into ways
to further publicize our projects and recruit participants. I have attached
two fliers-one for the Nutrition Assessment study, and one that introduces all
studies taking place in our department. If you know who I should contact
further, or if more information is needed please let me know.  One option that
helped us in previous semesters was when professors would make announcements
or show the powerpoint slide before class starts (as student arrive).  Any
suggestions or help in our efforts to recruit would be greatly appreciative.

The first, organizational meeting of Spring 2009 course ELE 313 will be 
on Wednesday, January 21 at 10am in Kelley Hall room 218 (room used for 
ELE 202 and 215 labs). The course instructor is Dr. Harold Vincent II.

During that organizational meeting, several options for the semester 
time slot of this course will be discussed to ascertain which option 
accommodates the greatest number of interested students. The following 
are the current time slots being considered, pending availability of a 
classroom and the course instructor:

(a) MWF 10-10:50am
(b) TR 8-9:15am
(c) MWF 8-8:50am
(d) Friday 2:30-4pm plus Wednesday 6-7 pm
(e) Two evening classes after 5pm, 1.25 hr each

If you are interested in taking the course, but cannot attend the 
organizational meeting on Jan. 21, please let me know of your interest

Some of you have asked about graduate socials and getting together after
work/class for the Spring semester. So I volunteered to send out the first
email to see if anyone is interested in this. When I worked over in ChE
the grad students would get together every two weeks/once a month and
sometimes I would even join them (lucky you).  Some of you gave
suggestions of Casey's or the Mews on a Thursday night. This way you can
have free appetizers. If you know of some other good places and some
deals, let me know.

So let's try for either Thursday, February 5th or 12th from 5:00 - ???
p.m. at Casey's.

Please let me know if this is something you are interested in doing once a
month or so. I have no problem arranging a day per month and emailing all
of you. It seems Thursday evenings work well but if that isn't the case,
I'm open to suggestions. I know some of you part-time students have told
me that you don't really feel apart of the department and also don't
really know your other peers. This is a good way of getting together and
relaxing for a few hours during the week.

The URI IEEE Student Chapter will have a meeting on Thursday, February 
5th at 7pm in Kelley 102. There will be a guest speaker, Ollie Dumas, 
from Helix Corp/Brooks Automation in Massachusetts. He will be 
presenting on his experiences, networking, and answering any questions 
anyone has.  All students are welcome to attend.
