Seminar Title: Developing multifunctional magnetic nanoparticles for 
imaging and therapeutic applications

Dr. Sun will discuss a reliable procedure for making dumbbell like 
Au-Fe3O4 nanoparticles with tunable sizes and magnetic properties. The 
particles coated with polyethylene glycol and various 
peptides/antibodies/anticancer drugs are stable in neutral physiological 
conditions and are able to target cancer cells with drugs being released 
in a pH-controlled manner. These nanoparticles can be used as sensitive 
labels for cancer diagnostics and as efficient delivery tools for 
therapeutics.

The URI IEEE Student Branch is sponsoring an S-PAC (Student Professional 
Awareness Conference) on Friday, September 25, at 2:00 pm in the Cherry 
Auditorium  (Kirk Building) with a catered dinner following in the 
Multicultural Center. The theme of this year's conference is: "Working 
in the 21st Century," with a talk by an IEEE National Speaker and a 
panel discussion on advice for entry-level engineers. Tickets are $5 and

The Graduate School is interested in hiring a student to carry out a
writing
assignment on our new Instruction Manual for the Preparation of Theses and
Dissertations.  The student also will serve as a back-up for our thesis/
dissertation formatter during the month of November while the formatter is
out of the office. The student should have strong writing skills and hold
a
masters degree that has required a thesis.  Because the work on this
project
is likely to require 10 or more hours per week, the student should not
currently hold an assistantship.

department so we can update our board. I'm tentatively scheduling this for

normally take these outside, so weather is permitting. So please plan on

outside the building near the Eng. Quad that would be great.

The Student Professional Awareness Conference begins tomorrow at 2 pm in 
Cherry Auditorium.  Tickets are still available from the department 
secretary (room A-118 in Kelley Annex) or you may purchase a ticket in 
Cherry Auditorium tomorrow between 1:45 and 2:00.  If you are an IEEE 
member you get one free ticket.  The ticket cost for non-members is $5.

The talk and the panel discussion are free for everyone (no ticket 
required).  You need a ticket to participate in the raffle and to attend 
the catered dinner in the Multicultural Center.  You may see members of 
the S-PAC committee in professional dress tomorrow, but there is no 
dress code for students attending the talks or dinner.

Here is the S-PAC schedule of events in Cherry Auditorium:

2:00     IEEE National Speaker Bala Prasanna: "Working in the 21st 
Century: Essential Skills to Survive and Thrive in the Present-Day 
Workplace."  Mr. Prasanna has worked for IBM since 2005, and before that 
worked for AT&T Bell Labs for over 20 years. No ticket required.

3:15    Break and Refreshments (no ticket required)

3:30    Panel Discussion: "Career Advice for Entry-Level Engineers" with 
representatives from four companies:
               Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), GTECH, IBM, 
Capstone Visual.  No ticket required.

5:00    Raffle.   Must have a ticket and be present to win.  The four 
prizes are prepaid Visa cards: $75, $50, and two at $25

5:30    Dinner in the Multicultural Center (with ticket)

If so, it would help with ELE and BME course schedule planning if you

(a) Which ELE or BME courses are you considering taking during summer

your first choice first, then second choice, etc.

(b) Which summer sessions (I, II, or III) are you available to take 
courses, and

(c) Do you have a conflict (e.g. summer job) with morning, afternoon or 
evening courses.
