The theme of this year's conference is: "Making the Transition from College to the Workplace," with a talk by an IEEE National Speaker and a panel discussion on advice for entry-level engineers. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased from the department secretary, Meredith, in room A-118 Kelley Annex. IEEE members get a free ticket. If you are not yet an IEEE member, join by going to www.ieee.org/join, become a member, and get a free S-PAC ticket. The purpose of the S-PAC conference is to educate engineering students on professional issues affecting their career. Whether you are close to graduation or still have several years to go, this conference will provide you with a wealth of valuable information that is not usually discussed in your classes. The information will help you to prepare for a successful career in engineering. Here is the conference program: 2:00 IEEE National Speaker Vishnu Pandey: "Career Archery: Hitting Your Mark in Your Chosen Field" 3:15 Break and Refreshments 3:30 Panel Discussion: "Making the Transition from College to the Workplace" Panelist Companies: BAE Systems Capstone Visual General Dynamics Electric Boat Naval Undersea Warfare Center 5:00 Raffle - prizes include Ipod shuffle, memory sticks, and gift certificates. Must be present to win. 5:30 Dinner in the Multicultural Center The panelists, as well as additional representatives from their companies, faculty, and alumni, will come to dinner with us. This is an excellent opportunity to talk with a variety of people about the engineering profession. I encourage all ECBE students to attend this conference using option (1) below. OPTIONS (1) Attend the talk and/or panel discussion, raffle, and dinner with a ticket ($5). Note that the catered dinner is a 17-dollar value. With sponsored subsidies, you get the dinner and raffle included with your five dollar ticket. IEEE members get a free S-PAC ticket. (2) Attend the talk and/or the panel discussion for free (no raffle or dinner). No ticket required. _____________________________________________________________________ Richard J. What I gathered from this,"It can be coded to pick up satellite transmissions," was Erickson's phone can also work on satellite phone network, i.e. Iridium or Global Star. The second part of the statement, "cannot be ?tracked? (GPS etc.) as traditional phones can be," I interpreted this as the phone can not be located remotely by the network provider (AT&T, Verizon, etc). If the product does not have GPS then I don't know how it could be tracked using satellite transmissions, From vaccaro at ele.uri.edu Mon Sep 22 14:30:35 2008 From: vaccaro at ele.uri.edu (Richard J. Hitting Your Mark in Your Chosen Field Abstract: Traditional advice on how to advance your career as an engineer is very focused on the industry and not the individual. A more modern and upbeat approach is given that stresses personal and professional development as opposed to simply working more hours. A 10 step process designed by a young engineer to help new graduates achieve more will also be introduced. Audience participation is key to the effectiveness of this presentation so be prepared to pay attention! 3:30 Panel Discussion with representatives from BAE Systems, Capstone Visual, General Dynamics Electric Boat, and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. (This part is also free - no ticket required) 5:00 Raffle (need a ticket and must be present to win) 5:30 Catered dinner at the Multicultural Center (need a ticket) Note: you may see members of the S-PAC committee dressed up on Friday but there is no dress code for people coming to the conference or dinner.
