Below is the description for ELE 548: Computer Architecture course for Fall
2008. This course is an introductory course at graduate level, but could also
be taken by senior undergrads. Please let me know if you are interested in
taking this course. Our first meeting will be on Wednesday, September 3rd,
at 4:00pm @ Kelley 203. Please stop by tomorrow if you are considering

ELE 548: Computer Architecture

This is a mezzanine course targeting seniors and first-year graduate
students. The prerequisite to this course is the Introduction
to Computer Architecture course. The objectives for the Modern
Processor Design course include: (1) to teach modern processor design
skills at the microarchitecture level of abstraction; (2) to cover current
microarchitecture techniques for achieving high performance; and (3) to impart
insights and hands-on experience for the effective design of contemporary
high-performance microprocessors for mobile, desktop, and server markets.

Participation 10%
Midterm Exam 30%
Project 50%
Oral Presentation 10%

I got the following notices concerning Mathcad.

>From Artie Martino, System Support Tech, Engineering Computer Center:

Node locked licenses were installed on four new machines in the Discovery
Center, room 203C.
DC-01, DC-02, DC-29 & DC-30 are the first machines located to the left and
right of the doorway of the Discovery Center (against the wall and/or
window)
Tell your students to speak to an operator if they need to use these pcs and
they're being used (when no classes are in session).

The one license on P4-28 in room 203B will be done today--will keep you
posted on progress
I also plan to post the schedule for the Discovery Center room to show when
all machines are open (no classes) today.

Hi,

I got the following notice from Ed Dickerman in regard to the distribution
of the mathcad program disks (Price: $20):


"I'll be downstairs in the IEEE lounge on Wednesday  
immediately following both classes for 15 minutes.

So Wednesday that would be from 10:50 am - 11:05am and then again from  
1:50 pm -2:05 pm.

Then on Friday I'll be downstairs in the lounge from 10:45 am - 11:00  
am, which is immediately following your ELE331 class and I'll be down  
stairs again from 12:45 pm - 1 pm  immediately preceding your ELE 322."




I would like to alert you to the fact that Mr. Dickerman is volunteering
his time to enable us to conduct the lecture in an effective way by using
Mathcad. Please make sure that you see him during the above time slots
and have available the purchase fee of $20.

The URI IEEE Student Branch is sponsoring an S-PAC (Student Professional 
Awareness Conference) on Friday, September 26, at 2:00 pm in the Cherry 
Auditorium  (Kirk Building) with a catered dinner following in the 
Multicultural Center. The theme of this year's conference is: "Making 
the Transition from College to the Workplace," with a talk by an IEEE 
National Speaker and a panel discussion on advice for entry-level 
engineers. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased from the department

Hi all, can anyone help me verify/ correct the folowing assumptions, thanks


I'm having a some difficulty understanding the statement about  
satellite transmissions. What I gathered from this,"It can be coded to  
pick up satellite transmissions," was Erickson's phone can also work  
on satellite phone network, i.e. Iridium or Global Star. The second  
part of the statement, "cannot be ?tracked? (GPS etc.) as traditional  
phones can be," I interpreted this as the phone can not be located  
remotely by the network provider (AT&T, Verizon, etc). If the product  
does not have GPS then I don't know how it could be tracked using  
satellite transmissions,

young engineer to help new graduates achieve more will also be 
introduced. Audience participation is key to the effectiveness of this
