SMILE (Science and Math Investigative Learning Experiences) is an after-school science and math club for middle school and high school students all over the state of RI, http://www.uri.edu/smile/. Its purpose "is to increase the number of underrepresented minority and educationally disadvantaged students who graduate from high school qualified to go on to higher education and pursue career in science, math, engineering and health professions." In the attachment, Lacey Schlachter is asking all URI engineering students to volunteer a few hours of their time on March 6-7 (MIddle School Engineering Challenge) or March 27-28 (High School Engineering Challenge) to serve as a Mentor or Consultant for a team of 4-8 teenagers, helping them think through their design. This year's projects focus on Cranes, Magnetic Levitation, or Remote Operated Vehicles but you don't need to be a mechanical engineer to have more than adequate background and skills to help - remember, you know a lot more than 8th graders! All you need are your engineering problem solving skills - i.e. how to think through a problem and brainstorm potential solutions. Often, the middle and high school students are interested in talking with you and finding out why you decided to study engineering. Some have never met an engineer. If you can volunteer some time to this very exciting and rewarding event, please contact Ms. Lacey Schlachter and plan to attend one of the Mentor Training Workshops on Feb. 23 or 25th. Additional information is provided in the attachment. regards, Prof. Boudreaux-Bartels -------------- next part -------------- An embedded message was scrubbed... Coffee, tea, bagels, and pastries will be provided at 9 am. This workshop is free of charge for all URI engineering students. If you plan to attend this workshop, please send an e-mail RSVP to vaccaro at ele.uri.edu. The Tau Beta Pi Engineering Futures Program was established to provide interpersonal skills for engineering students. This is accomplished through the presentation of sessions on campus by alumnus Tau Bates who are trained in the materials. The Engineering Futures Program received national recognition as winner of the 2007 Excellence in Engineering Education Collaboration Award. The speaker will be Dr. Stephen Kramer, Engineering Manager at Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies Company, East Hartford, CT. Here is a description of the sessions: People Skills Module 1: Describing Problems Learn how to describe problems in a direct, specific, and non-punishing manner and start problem solving that gets the problem solved and maintains relationships with others. People Skills Module 2: Motivation Problems Learn how to motivate people through the use of consequences, both natural (consequences which happen without effort on their part) and imposed (where someone needs to take an action to make the consequence happen). Also learn how to set up and follow plans once a solution is agreed upon to help ensure that the problem is permanently solved. _____________________________________________________________________ Richard J.
